Jessica Kelvas Wins State Wrestling Title

The high school wrestling season in New York State ended a couple of weeks ago with the state finals in Albany, but Putnam Valley’s Jessica Kelvas is just starting to heat up on the mats.
After competing this winter against the boys in the 130-pound weight class as a member of the Putnam Valley varsity team, Kelvas is now busy with tournaments competing against girls and she’s been dominating the competition.
She went down to Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and returned with a Kentucky State Championship under her belt.
This past weekend she traveled upstate to Cobleskill and came home with a New York State title. To win the crown she defeated a former national runner up in the title bout by a score of 7-3.

Now, Kelvas is setting her goals on the national level, and Putnam Valley coach Will Carano is not at all surprised by her success on the mats.
“Jess trains hard everyday and wrestles hard against me, senior Karl Lange or assistant coach Dan Turner,” Carano said of Kelvas. “She has goals and is doing the things she needs to do to achieve those goals.
The key with Jess is that literally each day she wrestles she improves technically and tactically. This is key because I doubt there are many, if any, girls that can physically match Jess. She is developing a much better calm control about her that enables her to wear and tear on her opponents without wearing herself out. All of this is obviously important, but the great thing about Jess is that she really enjoys the competition.”
Kelvas may enjoy the competition, but the competition is not enjoying it so much as she keeps recording the victories and tournament titles.
Next up Kelvas will travel to Long Island this weekend to compete in the USGWA East Coast Pre-nationals. After that she hopes to travel to Michigan to compete in the USGWA National championships.
